The Encyclopedia of Lynncair

The Prince of Dreams is one of the Gods who walked the lands in ancient times. He is known by many names; some call him the Prince of Dreams, others the God of Dreams, and even others "Lord Nightmare".

Despite the disagreement over his name, one thing is generally agreed-on regarding the Prince; he is not what one would call a "good" God. Legends depict him as a shadowy, plotting, conniving, insidious, dishonest and frankly downright evil individual. A nursery rhyme, in fact, is common among the younger folk of Lynncair pertaining to the Prince of Dreams:

Tales to children are told

Of the ill that He brings,

Ever since th'days of old

He's been pulling the strings...

Some call him Lord Nightmare;

Grim dreams follow'n His wake;

Whether one's'a merchant, king'r peasant,

Make no mistake--

None are safe from His touch,

Or at least so it seems;

All are at th'mercy

Of the Prince of Dreams.

Very few Essences of the Prince of Dreams have been located, and those that have been found have been of rather insignificant magnitude. One possible reason for this would be the Prince turning out to have escaped death in the Godswar, and to have survived the joint vengeance of Tyakan and Merustris when he fled North from Lynncair; another explanation is that there exists an almost-Complete Essence of Lord Nightmare, yet undiscovered.
