Digital Dore: Re-Imagining Dante in the 21st Century

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

English:

Contained in this gallery are my attempts at recreating scenes from Dante Alighieri's Divine Comedy in the style of engraver Gustav Doré. With Doré's pieces serving as source material, I use the Neverwinter Nights 2 toolset to craft scenes from the Commedia (working with terrain, textures, grass, fog, ambient objects and creatures, lighting, etc.) to create as faithful an imitation as possible of the original engravings.

This project was inspired by Professor Lino Pertile’s course on the Divine Comedy at Harvard University – more specifically, I originally got the idea during the lesson in which we viewed a large selection of artistic representations of Dante’s encounter with Paolo and Francesca by a variety of different artists, ranging from Doré to Boticelli. My goal is to “digitize” Doré’s masterful depictions, recreating the scenes using 3-D modeling software before taking screenshots from an appropriate “camera angle” to imitate the originals.

Italiano:
