Busy, and sick for a bit

Wasn't feeling too hot today--I was excused from track after they heard my cough. I decided some food would be a good idea, so I tried Burger King: bingo! Nothing two double-hamburgers, a large fries, and a small milkshake can't fix...I love it when afflictions resolve themselves quickly and relatively painlessly. I tend not to get sick often, and when I do, it's not for long, so I was happy to see that my streak continued. :)

New personal best on the 600!

Today's track meet went really well--I ran a personal best of 1:22 on the 600-yd, and would have done well in the 4x400 as well had it not been cancelled. All well. :)

Been very busy this weekend writing; I have a 6-pg english paper due Monday and a 10-pg history paper due Tuesday, so it's been hectic. NWN2 works like a charm on the new machine and I'm quickly getting used to the new toolset's quirks, so that's good news--however, I don't think The Star Mounts is going to actually start making any serious forward progress in the toolset until my homework load lightens up. Not enough time in the day to do everything I want to do... :)

NEW LAPTOP!

The eagle has landed, and NWN2 (and Oblivion, yeehah!) both work like a charm.

Been a bit lax in updates...

My laptop died...again. I've ordered a new one which should arrive on Tuesday the 23rd, though, and it will be able to run NWN2 and Oblivion (and Gothic 3, and Titan's Quest, and all the other games I've been meaning to play!) ;) . So I'm excited...in the meantime, I can't do much of anything at all videogame-related. Once I get everything set up on my new laptop, I'll start posting here again more often, since work on The Star Mounts will be able to start for real. :)

NWN2

Well, I finally bought NWN2 last night. I honestly don't think Obsidian is going to send me out the copy I won in their silly contest any time soon, and I don't feel like waiting any longer. :) I created a character and started the tutorial at very low settings...it looked sort of like Dungeon Siege II, and the music in the first area was nice. I can't say anything blew me away, but it was a nice first peek regardless. Anyways, this means that I can *finally* start development on The Star Mounts, my first planned project for NWN2! Check out the premise here: http://nwn2forums.bioware.com/forums/viewtopic.html?topic=542846&forum=111
It has an epic storyline with what I think is tremendous potential to become an instant classic in the community; it involves a variety of settings, despite the seemingly-limited scope of the story based solely off of the premise. I'll post more on TSM as I go.

Weekend! *sigh of relief*

Well, it's finally the weekend...of course, I still have plenty of homework, but at least I've got some time to relax. :P
Just finished track practice, and I've got a college interview on campus in about an hour which should be fun. After that, it's a homework marathon; math, music, history, compsci, and english. Brace yourself... :)

Track Meet

First track meet went really well today; I got my butt handed to me in the 600yd by two speedsters who ran 1:16 and 1:17 (I had a bad race--1:26), but then redeemed myself by winning the last relay of the day for our team as the 4th runner (anchor) of the 4x400; I started about a quarter of a (150yd) lap behind, but was able to catch him and ultimately blast by for the race win. :) My best time on the 600 remains a 1:24, but I hope to bring that down to a 1:20 eventually. Anyhow, feels good to have come back from behind and earned us that event win. :)

Homework Galore

Updates are going to be getting progressively shorter and more spread out, as evidenced by this one; homework is fierce and I haven't much free time, all things considered. I'll still be posting screenshots to the tls gallery once in awhile, as well as updating here regarding "The Star Mounts" once that starts going, but just wanted to give a heads-up now that it may get slightly more quiet around here.

Very Productive Day

I spent most of the day doing homework; I've got a bit more to finish up tomorrow, but I made good progress. I'm also mere minutes of work away from being completely done with college applications, which is really nice.

In terms of development, I built two new areas and decorated them with some placeables; I also took care of lighting and sound, and I'm pretty happy with the end result. All exterior areas so far have been built using WoRmS superb seasonal forest tileset, which is quite honestly the prettiest tileset I've ever seen for NWN; heck, it looks like NWN2, except it's all done for you instead of requiring one to paint grass or bumpy terrain. :) Anyhow, the tileset has mountains built-in, so this next segment of the game (in terms of outdoor areas) will continue to use his tileset.

I also designed a new custom plant system for the game involving fern-like plants called Iumasi that, a certain probability of the time, will yield a rare flower when "harvested". The Iumasi fern's flower is said to possess mystical healing powers, making them extremely valuable and sought-after (particularly since there is no such thing as "healing magic" in the world of Lynncair--all such spells and item-properties are disabled) by travelers of all kinds.

Just to address the matter of healing, by the way, there's a module heartbeat script meant to simulate gradual recovery; basically, if the player is injured, they will regain 1 point of health every 30 seconds or minute (I can't remember which) of real-time between levels 1 and 5. Between levels 5 and 10, this is increased to 2 points of health, then 3 for 10-20 (maxes out at 3 points per minute--this is gradual recovery, not regeneration, after all). You won't be going above level 5 in the first chapter anyways, but it's still worth mentioning that the script is in place. Also, healing kits (basically, first aid kits) are still in the game, so it's worth investing points in the "heal" skill (a class skill of Adventurers, the required custom class). So there are no potions, but there are healing kits and this recovery system.

BUSY

Good gravy but I've been busy. My new (and continuing) classes are all a lot of fun, but the amount of homework is significant. I won't have time to do much development on TLS in the near future, because my free time will be devoted to other endeavors. If I miss an update here or there, it's because I'm doing homework. ;)

Apps

Today was an app-finishing day. I'm writing this as 10:00pm approaches, and I'm just about done with everything, which is a really good feeling. Didn't do anything videogame-related today besides lurk on forums. :)

Music & Apps

The 2nd was a music day. I didn't open the toolset itself, but I isolated and edited 5 distinct music tracks for use in the module--2 were battle tracks (I only had 1 previously), and 3 were just fun, epic tracks. I spent literally hours listening to them in a row--instrumental music is so relaxing, and it's definitely good from a creativity standpoint (gets the juices flowing). I also spent some time working on a project that must not be further discussed.

I woke up and went on a run right away (my first in about 9 days), which was extremely refreshing. When I came home, I did a little more college application stuff (just a little, mind you!), did the music work described above, then spent the rest of the evening lazing around watching TV. :)

Today, I plan on doing some college apping (again)--I don't have a lot more to do, but it would be nice to finish before I go back to school tomorrow...

Happy New Year and such

First of all, happy 2007, everyone. The year of my graduation...yee-hah. :)

We had friends over for the past 2 days to celebrate the new year, which was enjoyable; it's kind of a tradition between our two families, and it's always nice to see them. This meant, however, that I was spending my time reading, watching DVD's, playing cards, playing Scrabble and other board games, and being a football fan instead of developing for TLS. ;) I did get some work done this afternoon...I actually did a good deal of dialogue writing for one of the main characters in the series (Tomas, the "henchman").

The idea here is to make Tomas much more of a living, breathing character than the "henchmen" in my past modules have been. He's an integral part of the story and he's there with the player at every turn, and if you make the effort to speak with him often, you'll find that he has many of his own opinions and insights into various events and other people that you'll interact with...at risk of looking like a copycat, I would say that he is to the player as Mat is to Rand, except often happier and cheekier (my henchmen always end up cheeky, don't they?). I did say from the start that The Lynncairen Saga combines some ideas from many various works of fantasy literature that I've read; I don't think any of them are drastic copies, but if you take a moment to think about it in-game, you'll be able to pick out a fair number of similarities between The Wheel of Time and The Lynncairen Saga, or the game by THQ called Summoner, for example--they were both inspirations of sort. You may also occasionally find a rare instance of a plot device stolen from The Da Vinci Code or Harry Potter...but I think that everything is put together seamlessly enough that the end product is something of its own, and I think that the central plot stands on its own merits.

In any event, after several thousand words-worth of writing and several hundred pages worth of reading (finished The Subtle Knife and read 100 pages into The Amber Spyglass), I'm tired...and I've got schoool starting the day after tomorrow. By the way, the His Dark Materials series by Phillip Pullman is simply superb. I read it years ago, in 5th grade or so, when it first came out, and I remember being completely nonplussed by it. Now, however, after reading some of the great works of fantasy literature out there and after having developed a heightened appreciation for what a great story is, I simply love this series. It establishes--in my mind--a perfect sense of suspended-disbelief...it's all so awesomely "theoretical" yet still mildly plausible that it's truly a joy to read and think about. There are only two book series' that have ever sent that shiver up my spine when I'm really into a good story, and I arrive at an epic point in the plot...I vividly remember those moments, because they're the ones that make reading and writing all worth the while. The first was when Rand was cleansing saidin and the huge battle was taking place around him. The second was when Nynaeve is in that tavern (either in Crossroads of Twilight or Knife of Dreams) and she tells that other Malkieri guy that Lan is riding out alone to fight in the Blight (Tarwin's Gap, iirc), and he cries out that the Golden whatever of Malkier will rise again. What can I say--those epic moments are just awesome. :) Hmm...oh yeah, His Dark Materials. Same thing here, on a smaller scale...simply superb storyline with memorable characters and a thrilling plot.
