The Academy of Modding Excellence

I figured I would give a callout to an organization that appears to be forming up--it's called the Academy of Modding Excellence. The AME seems to be an Oscar's of sorts for NWN1 and NWN2 community content, where winners for various categories are selected by a committee of "respected" community members rather than by popular vote. What is the award, you ask? It's called the Golden Dragon (ooh, aah! ;) ). I personally think this is a great idea, and that it may breathe some much-needed life into both the NWN1 and NWN2 builder communities.

I have to say that I have some misgivings about it. I suppose that on one level, it's no different from letting a select group write reviews of modules. But the idea of some sort of "elite" group of individuals dishing out what might be considered highly prestigious awards doesn't sit well with me. I guess I just prefer the consensus public opinion used for other vault awards (hall of fame, module of the year, etc), flawed though it may sometimes be. But hey, who am I? :) -B

I definitely see where you're coming from--the difference between this and the "select group reviewing modules" is that ANYONE can join the reviewers' guild, while this is only by invitation. Whether or not this is an improvement or a step in the wrong direction could (and will, I'm sure) be argued long into the night. :) Just wait 'til the Modules Forums start arguing the merits of a private team doling out awards versus the current alternative...

Still, I'm excited about it.

I glanced at some of the discussion posted at the link you gave us, Alex. I actually like the idea myself. Done properly (a big if, I know), these new awards could be a strong complement to the Hall of Fame/Mod of the Year awards, much like the Grammys are to the American Music Awards or the Emmys are to the People's Choice Awards. (Not the best analogies, perhaps, but good enough for my purposes...)

I agree with you, Lee. I'm pretty optimistic that this organization will end up being a respected one in the community...but it'll have to earn that respect, that's for sure. :)
